Programmatic leadership and guidance are provided by:
Faculty Director, Dr. Santiago Lopez
Dr. Lopez broadly studies the physical and human dimensions of global change with a particular focus on intersections between climate and human land use change. Much of this work emphasizes the dynamic intersections of changes in land use, how they occur, and their implications for ecosystem processes and services, and human welfare. Dr. Lopez uses a variety of geospatial tools in his research and geographic information science approaches. UW Bothell EERC Faculty Oversight Committee
The Faculty Oversight Committee operates like a non-profit Board of Directors, providing oversight and decision making on fiscal, personnel, and programmatic matters. The Leadership Team members and the chair of the Community Advisory Board are ex officio members of the Faculty Oversight Committee.
Dr. Avery Shinneman
Dr. Shinneman studies recent and long-term changes in the environment arising from shifts in climate and land use, with an emphasis on aquatic ecosystems. She teaches environmental science courses that focus on how the process of scientific investigation leads to improved understandings of earth systems and processes. Dr. Shinneman is passionate about outdoor, hands-on experiential learning and the messy process of discovery. Email: email@example.com.
Dr. Carrie Tzou
Dr. Tzou studies the design of science and environmental science learning programs with an emphasis on issues of place, power, culture, agency, and identity in the context of sociocultural theories of learning. She uses the results of her investigations and educational theory to design nationally-recognized outdoor environmental curricula, such as “Learning In Places”. She teaches broadly across science education fields in regard to both teaching and assessment practice. Email: firstname.lastname@example.org.
Dr. David Stokes
Dr. Stokes has studied a broad array of topics in ecology and conservation biology including ecology and conservation of penguins, land-use planning and biodiversity conservation, conservation of endangered salamander populations, and human perception and attitudes about biodiversity and nature. For the last 8 years he has conducted field research at St. Edward State Park and other local urban green spaces, investigating invasive species population dynamics and spread and wildlife diversity and habitat use. He is committed to providing research experiences to diverse students and leads UWB faculty and student engagement in the EERC at St. Edward State Park. Email: email@example.com.
Dr. Jeff Jensen
Dr. Jensen studies the ecology, physiology, evolution, and conservation of fish. Recently he has focused investigations on the distribution, history and restoration of kokanee salmon in the Lake Washington watershed. Dr. Jensen is an active regional leader in engaging community organizations and volunteers in citizen science efforts to monitor local fish populations. His teaching strives to instill fascination and reveal the practical value of ecological and evolutionary knowledge for human communities and endeavors. Email: firstname.lastname@example.org.
Dr. Melanie Malone
Dr. Malone studies the degradation and contamination of soil, particularly through an environmental justice and critical physical geography lens. She has studied contaminants in soils of rural agricultural systems and in urban gardens used by marginalized populations. Dr. Malone’s teaching emphasizes hands-on practice in the field with geospatial and soils techniques as well as intersections of policy, science, environmental justice, and collaborative community science. Susan Carlson, ex-officio member on community partnerships
Susan has worked in environmental and sustainability education (ESE) for over three decades at national, state, and local levels. Much of her work has entailed building capacity for the field through ESE program, nonprofit, and community partnership development, as well as national and statewide network building. Susan is principally interested in establishing K-16 educational pathways leading to college degree programs and careers in environmental fields while expanding access and persistence among diverse students. Susan has been a catalyst for the EERC’s development from the beginning and looks forward to supporting the EERC’s community and K-12-16 programming into the future.

- Program Administrator, Kellie Holden
Kellie is the Program Administrator for the UW Bothell Goodlad Center for Reinventing Public Education in addition to serving as the EERC’s Program Administrator. Email: email@example.com.
- Program Assistant, Cameron Locke
Cameron graduated from UW Bothell with her degree in Environmental Studies in June 2020. Her interests are focused in sustainability and conservation, especially within the marine environment. She is excited to help the EERC get its feet on the ground and is deeply involved with connecting higher education with the Greater Puget Sound Community through her position at UW Bothell as the CBLR Program Assistant, and hopes to bring her experiences to her role with the EERC. - Interim Marketing and Program Director, Sarah Verlinde (phasing out of position in July)
Sarah helps manage the website and marketing communications for EERC while the organization grows. Sarah works full-time for the Office of Sponsored Research and specializes in supporting developing research clusters and research centers at the University of Washington Bothell. EERC Community Advisory Board
The Community Advisory Board (CAB) is under development and planned to be appointed and commence work by June 2021. The CAB will provide a strong link between the community and the EERC staff and faculty.
